I've gone through a few systems in the past couple of years. I have 2 running right now, this is one of them I designed to be simple and easily duplicated.

This one consists of 2 5-gallon buckets. I based the design off of the 3 bucket design in the Urban Aquaculture Manual (http://www.webofcreation.org/BuildingGr ... Chap2.html). I modified the design to just 2 buckets by putting the filter in the bottom of the plant bucket.

The water is pumped from the bottom of the fish bucket (2 Black Moores) by an airlift pump. It is then carried through the pipe closest to the camera, to the top of the filter bucket. The cilantro is planted in a lid-pot and the roots hang into the water. The water then goes down through the gravel, then through 2 layers of filter sponge to the intake of the return pipe and then to the fish bucket again.

The airlift is very efficient at removing solids and they are easily removed from the filter tank. I might get some dwarf shrimp for the filter tank to pick the solids off the gravel. The growth of the cilantro has been very good as well. You can see the growth from Oct 17 to Nov 3 in the pics.
