I recently pulled out my first harvest of spinach and spring onions ( ). At the same time I changed the sock filter on the return to the sump.

2 days later my water is as clearer than it's ever been, and whilst it's probably pretty obvious that the sock is the likely candidate, I was wondering if pulling out some of the plants could have had something to do with it.

I had read on here that spring onions are an insecticide when planted in soil, and that got me wondering whether there were plants that were actually bad for the fish when planted in the grow beds; Has anyone noticed particular plants help/hinder fish when planted in the growbeds?

Interesting question.

I do kinda agree that the sock is probably the culprit. It was really only needed early on.

I do not know of any plants that would be particularly bad for fish just by growing in the system.

My system has been going for quite a while now though, and I had a sock on the outlet already, I just swapped it for a fresh one.

I could put the other sock back on but that wouldn't be conclusive because this sock might have cleared it all up.

Very interesting though. We know beans fix nitrogen with their roots, and spring onions act as an insecticide, I wonder what other plants do.
