Hello all, hope this doesnt sound stupid, the mrs and i bought a new system from backyard aquaponics and we are totally stoked!!!!

Only thing is we are also impatient.....

Had the system up and running for a week, one grow bed to one tank. Put some gold fish in to start with, then we started hunting around for some real fish. At first, there wasnt much around, so when we found the trout man in henty, we purchased 100, 50 for each tank thinking that we may lose a couple.

two days later the silver perch man rang and said he had some available to, so we got 50 of them too! oops, and 4 marron just for luck!

I know im going to have to buy another tank, but will they be alright while in the fingerling stage?

P.S. Joel see you soon.

Speak soon all. :D :D

The trout range from 50mm to 80mm, and the siver perch are 30mm to 40mm. the marron are size.

Humm... tank might be big enough for a while.... what is it 2000ltr?

But you'll need more growbeds.... and yep another tank would be good....

Why?... coz the trout will grow quickly .... and get big.....

The Silver Perch wont grow very quickly over winter..... result..... bigger trout, no silvers

Sorry Rupert but your wrong . Matter cannot be dissapated ,, merely changed in form ,, so the Silver perch are still there but they are just part of the trout:) ROFLMAO.

beeeeeen ,, if you haven't got much time to throw in new grow beds and / or plants ,, a couple of buckets with gravel will help as a "stop gap".

Definitely get crackin. Get more gravel (whatever media) starting cycling in whatever way you can until you get more grow beds in. Buckets, barrels, paint strainer bags with gravel in them where the water has lots of O2. That is a lot of fish of a sudden!

Keep up with the testing and water changes if need be and good luck!

In My opinion more gravel at this stage isn't going to help.

a bigger tank might, but ultimately you're going to see ammonia and nitrite spikes as your system is not cycled (doesn't have a population of bacteria).

only way to cheat on that is to beg borrow or steal some (a nice amount) of gravel from an established AP system.

impatience in cycling is just that much worse during the cooler months :(

welcome :)

Yeah ... good point Steve.... missed the part about only having the system up (cycling) for a week....

Just exaserbates the problem with the amount of fish even further....

Yep... you'll need more growbeds pretty soon.... but your immediate worry as Steve suggests is that you currently don't have any bio-filtration taking place.... as you haven't cycled....

Do as Steve suggests.... beg borrow or steal some (a nice amount) of gravel from an established AP system.

Or get as much gunk and old water from someone with an aquariium pronto.... it will help a bit

Both would be great.... good pickup Steve...

I made the same mistake with "bargain" fish that were too good to be passed up and paid the price dearly with hardly any plants and my system not cycled properly. Just PLANT and as quickly as possible. I went into the garden and dug up loads of plants and just stuck them in. Once the chaos calmed down I just slowly replaced them with vegetables. The plants sulked a bit after they were returned to the soil though.

Oh, and I raided the local pet shop for "under-gravel" gunk.
