I have two 300lt grow beds

1500lt fish tank

15,000lt/h pump

I have just finished building this, as i have only had a chop and flip i thought it was time to have a bigger build

I am just waiting for the clay balls to turn up and i will have the system working

Looks good. I would add a sump. Have the FT drain into the sump. Sump pumps into grow beds. Thats just me but isnt necessary. You water level is going to fluctuate. Bigger sump will alow you to add more grow beds in the future. Most of my solids collect in the sump. So its also easier to clean.

Another thought is access to the FT? How is easy is it going to be to harvest and clean the FT.

The gb are 500lt not 300lt

I will look at a sump and try to workout where to put it as i am limited for space

Sump? Why? Looks to me you're set high enough to drain directly into the FT..

Because if he does a flood and drain set up (bell siphon or timer) the water level will fluctuate constantly which stresses the fish. A constant flood design wouldnt fluctuate the water level but a sump is still beneficial for the increased water volume, centralized cleaning point away from fish, and stable water level even during water loss.

If he he does a solids lift overboard (SLO) then they will vacuum his tank keeping clean and all the gunk will deposit into the sump. Making it easier to keep clean from one central location. Less stress on the fish cleaning their tank.

Adding a sump gives you more time between top ups also. You also want as much water volume as you can give the system. The bigger the system the more and longer it resist changes to things like PH. Which is important for mistakes and errors.

I would think if filtration is the desired result an RFF would be the choice. The sump would be a pretty poor filter, more of a periodic sedimentation device, and a pretty poor one since the water is stirred every few minutes. And, the sump is more often used after the GB's to just collect the filtered water to be pumped back into the FT because the GB's are at a lower level than the FT.
That's my understanding of the FT to GB to sump setup. A Radial Flow Filter or swirl filter or whatever the word of the day is, is a much better filter than a small sedimentation tank.......if you feel the need.

Sump isn't a filter. That's what the growbeds are for. The sump is just an extra resivor for water to prevent water level fluctuations.

Never seen a standardized set up. We are all kind over the place and it will work just fine either way. My FT has SLO into the sump. Sump pumps water into grow bed. Grow bed drains into FT. Keep my tanks nice and clean. Monthly I clean the pump and vaccuum the sump. Fish aren't disturbed or stressed. Sump is easily accessible.
