Well after about 6 long years having been off forums, (was an active member on many reef-keeping forums) kept a massive sunlit marine set up, growing huge corals.

Well I'm...finally back on one...albeit this time while finally getting my fingers wet again, I'm gonna consume what I grow

So my literally in the backyard setup, has a total water volume of around 5000 litres. An IBC flowbin sunk into the ground, acts as a sump where I have dual Jebao 15000lph pumps driving flow to the (currently void of fish) main fish tank (3000L), as well as to the four gravel beds. Air to the tank, DWC and two bio media barrels, is driven by dual Jebao 100l/min air compressors mounted into a 50mm manifold.

I've based my system on planning for redundancy, i.e. with just one water and air pump going off line or if the power goes out (common issue in SA!), will be on battery backup so the system should still limp along with water flow and air.

We heading into winter from around the end April, temps will start going down so still contemplating if I want to keep trout or tilapia (Coptodon rendalli). Summers are quiet hot here, winters can get cold but still be manageable. Added ammonia a couple weeks ago and like watching paint dry, patiently waiting for the system to cycle.

What fish are you looking putting in the system ?

Sounds like your system is around the same size as mine.
I have 2 ibc's in ground as the sump with a 9k lph pump which will pump the sump dry if the water level drops too much. Your 1k sump and 15k lph pump could be an issue. But yeah sounds like you have a handle on it.

Thanks for the welcome....here's a short clip of my setup.

I'm still contemplating if I should keep trout, still have a couple weeks to decide as the system should have cycled by then. I have both (DC 24v) pumps operating at about 70% power. Need to put in a battery backup ASAP, as we experiencing rolling blackouts at the moment ("load shedding").
