Hello I've been lurking on the forum for a few weeks. My wife and I bought a house last year that has a 12X12 Pond the about 3 feet deep. The pond it self needs so major repair as it leaks all its water. As part of the repair process I have been researching Aquaponics and think thats the direction I want to take it in. Im attaching some photos of the pond to give you an idea of what im working with.

Behind the pond is a very large Hong Kong Orchid which im considering cutting back because of the amount of debris it produces. I would appreciate your thoughts on that.

Im also looking for suggestions on how you think I can use this space for aquaponics.

I already have electricity and well water.

Hope this is enough to start a new conversation.

-Nick

Hi Nick, welcome to the forum :headbang: .

I see that your pictures didn't come through so you may want to repost them. The information in the first two threads here might help with that - http://www.backyardaquaponics.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=4

Cheers

Hi Nick welcome to the forum. a 12'x12'x3' pond sounds like a good starting option.
In my experience AP can provide a great alternative to other options for pond filters.

what sort of fish are you looking for and what are you looking to get from the system ?

look forward to seeing your pic's.

Hey thanks for the heads up on the pictures here is a link with the images.

Once I repair it and get it holding water I want to have tilapia in it and a few ornamentals. Maybe large Koi.

Mmmmmm that looks lovely Nick...

Are you going to put another liner or fill and paint sealer in it?

I know it looks extremely rough :)

I haven't decided whether I should do a liner or fill and seal. I was hoping that someone here could tell me the preferred route.

Just noticed you're from Australia! Right behind the fountain in one of those shots, I have an Australian finger lime and it looks like im going to get fruit this year for the first time. As part of the build im hoping to add a drip for that tree and the mango next to it.

I think you'd have to pull the old liner out and have a thorough look if the masonry is sound, find and clear any drains and fountain plumbing, see if it sits on a slab or edge foundations.
Based on what you find will determine what you need to do.
Being a square shape it would be easy to get a good finish with a liner.

The system does not have any drains and I was considering breaking the concrete and installing one, but after looking at a bunch of member systems I dont think a drain at the bottom is neccesarily required. The previous owner built square shape of the pond on top of an existing slab using concrete blocks and concrete.

Previously they had no filtration only air pumps and the pump sitting in the water for the fountain. Hopefully I can get the area cleaned up this weekend and start the tear down.
