So it's been a while since I posted here viewtopic.php?f=18&t=23892&start=0. I still have plans to clean the moat back at my parents house still and it's partly aquaponics based and partly a giant swirl filter. At the moment its designed and mostly costed out but I'm going to need to spend some time and money on this one. It looks like I'm going to need a digger and everything.

In the mean time I've moved house in london and I now have a lovely garden which gets the sun for most of the day so I've set up a nice little home system and filled it with 50 baby trout (mix of rainbow and brown.

In terms of building it I found it particularly hard to find some of the larger pieces considering I don't have a car. This means getting an IBC delivered (and through the house to the back garden) was going to be a nightmare. As it happens I managed to buy a kiddie pool on ebay for far less and it was delivered straight to my door. It makes a really great fish tank and is able to hold about 2200 litres so I can scale it up nicely. I also have a hydroponic store down the road from me where I can get the grow beds. For the hydrotons I had to get them home in a taxi :D.

Right now I've started with a simple grow bed at one end growing lettuce and rocket. I expect to buy another similar grow bed to go the other end as well as a long thin one to go along the right hand side (see image). I'm growing the fish out a bit before I add another grow bed or two in about a month.

As well as the extra 2 grow beds which will serve nicely for cucumbers, radishes, tomatoes, carrots and a few more - I am also experimenting with a sort of DWC set up which I hope I'm doing right. I've bought some polystyrene sheets and cut small holes in it which I'm filling with rockwool. I've planted a load of watercress seeds and I'm waiting to see them germinate.

If you have any questions about my system please fire away and I'll do my best to answer. Also I'm kinda new to this beyond window / goldfish setups so please do advise if you see any potential issues ;)

Hugh... my only concern.is for the 50trout, and the seemingly small growing bed area..
I suspect that there might be a big issue soon, unless you can.incorporate a filter to remove most of the solids..
Remember that the rule-of-thumb, is for about 30L of media per fish.. 50Trout... gives 1500L of grow bed media. :-(
