Only in 1 G.O. tank. They will lip like mullet along the top of the water. The DO is the same as other tanks...over 6.0. All other water parameters are ok. They seem fine, and if the other large tank was doing the same, I would chalk it up to "normal behavior" of a herbivore. Not really worried, but curious...do your tilapia lip at the top too?

I would have said O2, but if you have DO capabilities, then that must be ruled out..

what's a G.O. tank

if you throw food, do they go mad for it..

'tis strange that it is confined to the one tank in a common system..
..

Sorry, my abbreviation for a grow out tank(G.O.) They do it primarily after I feed them, when they have gone through the "feeding frenzy" stage. I did see a few in the other G.O. tanks doing it for the first time yesterday. D.O. is over 6.0, so I don't think that's an issue. I maybe have more TDS then I should- wonder if that could be a cause??

Thanks Dagger. They look happy, I wasn't worried...just curious. They look exactly like mullet do when they are "lipping". With mullet, they are feeding on floating plant material. I'm thinking the tilapia are doing the same...feeding on bits of feed that gets smashed apart when they all attack it.

You can test your DO,test just after feeding when they have finished mopping up all the food, all my five tanks the tilapia lip after feeding time.tilapia breath at the surface when DO levels get down to 1mgl,you tested at 6 so it definitely isn't DO levels, but I would interested to see if the levels drop after feeding,if they do at all.

The O2 does drop, but only from around 6.3 down to 6.0/6.1. after feeding.

I wonder if there is any connection with the amount of oil released at feeding time,if i look across the surface i can clearly see the oil floating on the surface.....

You would assume that there would be a.degree of "taste" in that oil, even if there was no solids..
