Hiya! I've spent a few years dabbling around the internet, looking at this and that, my uncle has a hydro shop, and is currently in the middle of getting a bigger system(500 gal, ft I think?) Set up, and I've been experimenting with garden techniques when I saw a little old 1 gallon Brita filter in the garage! I decided I was going to try my hand at small scale aquaponics, using the filter for tank, and growbed(where the unfiltered water is poured in), so while I've been fiddling with it, and trying to do some fishless cycling (getting the right drain rate for a lazy little rig) and looking at this forum for the majority of my help. My idea is that if I can grow some spinach up to at least transplanting size, I'll be able to justify to myself spending some money (<$200 USD) on a barrelponics setup, maybe using existing supplies from this guy I've got! Should I post more about the tiny aquarium in the member system area, or can I get some help on here with that?

Welcome to the forum sparhawk817 :thumbright:

Probably member systems but general system discussions will work if you just need to ask some questions and don't want a full system thread. We do like pictures either way since this helps to answer any questions.

Cheers

Welcome to the forum man. :wave1: Now that you mention it, I think that I may have to go dig out my old Brita pitcher. If it can't get the chlorine and fluoride out of my horrible tap water, maybe it can produce some spinach.

Thanks for the warm welcomes! Once i get the pump and everything dialed in I'll look at putting some fish in, I'll post some pics tomorrow I think.

Spinach hasn't done as well as other greens in my growbed and towers, and I have also read other threads where spinach hasn't done so well. My spinach seedlings planted closest to the water outlets died, and the ones towards the centre have finally kicked on enough to pick a few leaves. No idea why since lettuce, rocket, beets, chard, coriandar, chives, parsley, celery and watercress are all doing well.

So here's some pictures of my setup, I just did a full water change because there was a lot of sediment and the water was looking gross, but I don't have any fish yet, so I'm not really worried about it. I've got what I think is two gallons of water in there, I'm not sure what kind of fish to put there, because they'll need to produce a fair amount of waste and all right?

That's one! Lol, my nitrates were at 30 ppm before the water change, don't have a way to test ammonia yet.
