appx 6000 US gallons- If I did 1 tbs per 5 gallons, and went on the low side figuring 5000 gallons, I would need 62.5 cups of salt? That seems like too much.

This should work but it doesn't show up on my phone. If not google "pond salinity calculator". We use road salt b/c it's cheap. I can give you a brand if needed but not at home right now.

What is the difference (besides price), between pool and road salt?

Pool salt is usually just sodium chloride but road salt can be calcium chloride, magnesium chloride, and sodium chloride combo. Usually doesn't matter since you need the chloride for dealing with offsetting nitrites.

I use water softener salt - http://t.homedepot.com/p/Morton-Salt-White-Crystal-40-lb-Water-Softener-Salt-3983/100351742/. It's usually cheaper then the road salt and dissolves super fast - although maybe it's cheaper in Florida...
