I'm wondering about using bamboo as vertical towers (like Zip-Grow) - has anyone tried this? I know that bamboo has been used for rafting systems (I've heard that they can last upwards of 2 years before rotting out).

For the towers I'm thinking about 4' pieces, knocking out the nodes with an auger bit, drilling some planting holes... for media however I am not sure what to use. Rock wool or something like that perhaps, or getting more sustainable and trying out some loofahs.

Any ideas? THANKS

To get the bamboo to last two years it will need pretreating, otherwise with water flowing through its a matter of months,my untreated bamboo poles forming the fish house lasted just under the year, they now need replacing due to rot and attack by bugs.If you can get the bamboo free[mine grows at the bottom of the garden] worth a try if you are buying it,plastic pipe is a lot more durable option. The design in bamboo i think would be a challenge also in respect of keeping the water inside and not running where ever it wanted to.
Now loofahs sounds interesting....
