Hello!

I am new on here and figured I would introduce myself and share my system. I am working on a masters degree in fisheries and mariculture and I was fortunate enough to get my studies to revolve around aquaponics. I have been working on a fairly large system that will be used as a research and educational tool.

I am currently putting together a blog to help chronicle the build process if you would like to take a look.

I cant seem to get any images to upload here otherwise I would.

The blog can be found at:

What do you find to be the easiest way to resize your images to post?

Welcome to the forum. Massive space you have there.

How deep are your dwc beds? They look quite shallow, but it could easily be a trick of the scale if those beds are huge.

Yes, they are much shallower than I have seen in a typical DWC. They are at 6" this is something that may need adjusting as we run some trials in the near future!

Great pics and nice looking system there.
I really liked your blog, especially the tilapia breeding post. I don't know much about it but you make it seem relatively simple. What's the minimum amount of fish and smallest tank you think you could breed them in? We have adult tilapia and some extra tanks, but I'm not sure the tanks are large enough.

Also, what is the objective of your graduate study and at what university?

Thank you Samuel.

Getting Tilapia to spawn and growing out the fry is too easy. If you had a real small trio of just 3" fish you could do it in as little as a 30 gallon tank. Larger adults I would say a minimum of 55 - 75 gallons with no problem.

I was with Texas A&M University. Actually just graduated this past May with my masters in Fisheries & Mariculture in which I convinced some folks to let me focus on aquaculture & aquaponic system design. As a result of my work, I managed to continue with my job on the aquaponic system that I built, only now I actually get paid to do it! So I really lucked out.

Great stuff, best of luck in your program. I think I recognize your photos from Instagram lol.

How many males and females should I put in a 50 gallon tank to breed? We have a few tanks and I'd like to put them to use

Sam, my blues breed well with 1-2 males and 3-5 females in a 55. Also had luck with 4-5 mixed in a green water plastic koi pond that is in the ground outside. Not sure the ratio, but apparently at least 1 female. My gold's have been much harder.
I 've seen some mating behavior in my indoor 55, and had some babies in the outside spa, but I also have some blues in the spa, and am not sure which bred.
