Here's my system. Used three blue barrels. I've got 20 little goldfish in there now. It hasn't cycled yet. I'm really interested in any advice that can be offered.

Haha, yup, I made stands for the fish tank and sump using the top and bottom off a fourth barrel that seemed to have contained some sort of dubious chemical - unusable for anything else. Anyone know how long it should take before I start to see ammonia readings? I've had the fish in for five days now and haven't really noticed an increase in ammonia.

Nice system Kris.

My main question from our other chat is: How is winter for plant growth over there? Does it shut down or is there enough sunshine for some plants to carry on? I know your system is new but looking around your AP system I can see there is a lot of other growth so you probably have some plant growing experience.

Regards, Martin.

Winter is the best time for my veggies. I plant winter vegetables and all of the perennial veges take off in winter. Summer is the most difficult season. I'm on tank water and the soil is sandy so I can't give enough water to my dirt garden. Im only 100m from the beach so I don't get frosts. My main problem is salt spray which kills off my basil and spinich if I'm not careful.

Photos above are the result so far. Its cycled now. Ph stayed near 7 and everything else is at 0. I had high nitrite readings for a while and some nitrate until a couple of days ago but I think the plants have taken off and are using it all. Only 2 dead fish, one unexplained and one that went for a ride through the overflow and died a week later. Pretty happy so far!

Yep, it's river gravel. Dirt cheap but super heavy.

I have the same stuff in mine. The barrels actually started bending at the bottom because of the weight.
