So my mum came around last week and saw my aquaponics system, and she's highly impressed, so much so that she's accepted my offer to build her a blue barrel system as her birthday present this year. fine print being that she supplies the materials, i supply the labour! haha.

I kinda wish i'd gone with blue barrels from the get go instead of IBC's, with so many idea's i have on how versatile the barrels are.

This is going to be a constant flood system, the fish tank being 2 blue barrels on their side, joined together via the top drain plugs, that will have mesh over also so as to separate the tanks also. 1 tank to have guppies, the other marron. pump in the marron tank, return to the guppy tank.

I've included a VERY rough sketch of the build, there will be 4 grow beds instead of the shown 3, and i hope to do some nice cladding and doors for fish tank access.

I've priced up all the parts needed, all the way to the veggie seedlings to the fish food, and it comes in at around $550.

Keep in mind that those BB's will really bow out, do you plan for the cladding to hold them in shape?

A blue barrel makes a grate stand for the half barrel beds, is cheap and can be where you keep your guppies

Hey Porter, yeah i'm making a timber frame that will support the base of the grow beds as well as the tops to stop the bow. the cladding will then fix to the frame. Going to use corrigated iron for the cladding. should come up a treat.
