Since most of the fish are now tucked away on a storage room shelf I decided to put a few in an aquarium so my grandsons (2 & 4) could see them. There are three goldfish in this 10 gallon aquarium.
I've made a little mini raft with the lid from a foam cooler that was used to ship a Christmas ham one year. It's 9" wide and 13" long.
I drilled the larger hole not quite all the way through and then drilled a smaller hole. The seeds, bib lettuce and one cabbage in the center, are rolled up in strips of paper towel and stuck in the hole. A few glass aquarium rocks go around to help hold it upright. It's setting in a nice sunny South window.

Hope to see some sprouts in a few days.

OK, the mini raft was a failure. The seeds germinated and grew 1" to 2" tall and then stopped. They stayed that way for several weeks and then the roots rotted off. So the fish are back in the main system with their buddies and the little tank dismantled.

What colour were the roots?
Was the system located in doors or out?

It could have just been lack of dissolved oxygen and/or sunlight.
