I'm not a fan of the test sticks. Dip three or more sticks (simultaneously) next time you do a test and see if all the sticks return the same results. None of the ones I have used previously passed this test (although they were "only" medical grade, not horticultural grade).

I had these test sticks floating around for use with my spa. I will be picking up one of those API water test kits soon. The water in the tank at the moment is just dirty water from cleaning the media so i'm not worried about it at this stage.

Just a quick update,

Called the Broome hatchery the other day to see if he had any Barra fingerlings available. They won't be ready till the end of October early November. The fishies are cheap, $1 each for 50mm barra if you buy 100 or more. Myself and a couple of mates will buy one big batch when they are ready. So I have a heap of time to sort out any little problems and cycle this bad boy. I've decided to cycle it up and get the bacteria nice and strong before I add the fish/plants. Suggestions?

I've plumbed up the GB water supply feed and the FT water drip water fall aeration thingy mabbob too. Still waiting for my pump:(...

I'm off to Bunbury tmoz for a month to do some reno's to my rental property. So when I get back I'll start adding some ammonia.

Cya in a month.

Might as well add the ammonia before you go... and just let nature do it's thing....

Should be "cycled" by the time you get back.... at least to a level where you can "bump" it pretty quickly...

Yeah I would have liked to have done that but I haven't got a pump yet. So I'll just have to wait unfortunately. The old EBay waiting game!

Some bacteria will colonise in the tank(s) where you have water. Of course the surface area of the inside of a tank is minuscule compared to the specific surface area of a GB full of media, but it's a start that could help speed things along (marginally) when you return.

Completely unrelated to aquaponics but it was a bright and sunny day on Saturday and so I thought I'd take the old spinner out for a spin!!!!

Image

She ran a little rough at first but by the time I got to Donnybrook she was humming nicely.
This photo was taken in Boyanup on the way back to Gelorup!!!

While I was at my mates place we striped the paint off the grill and bumper. The previous owner painted them black. Looks much better now. One day I will repaint her!

Alrighty!

I'm back in Karratha and have started cranking up the system ready for the Barra which should be ready by the end of the month.

I dosed up the tank with some 25% ammonia. I did some calulations and worked out that for my 800L tank i should only need about 2ml of ammonia. Well...... I scrapped that idea because it seemed a too smaller amount so I slurped some in! BAD IDEA!!! NH3 levels went through the roof. HAhahaha oh well lucky I don't have any fish in the tank. Live and Learn.

At the same time I planted a heap of seedlings I bought In Gero on the way up to Karratha. Its been hot and windy up here but the lettus leaves look to be handling it ok.

I week later the NH3 levels are still 8ppm or higher but I have started to see nitrites and nitrates appearing.
Also the lettus leaves are looking better. Some of the plants are yellowing which is expected I guess. I have also added a capful of seasol and some chelated iron.

Here is what she is looking like atm.

Well i have procured another bulky and was going to use it to make two more GB's but instead decided to use the bulky as a large fish tank and cut the existing FT down into a GB.

So I will have 2 GB's and 1 1000L FT.

I buried the FT a little and plumbed it up to the existing GB. Now I have to make a stand for the 2 GB's.
I'll make the stand big enough for 3 GB's

Here are some Pics.

I would ask if you thought it might be a little early to expand... Then I realized how silly that question would be

Hahahahah yeah that's it! I haven't even got my barra yet and I'm expanding. I just want more water so it's just that little bit more stable. And I have ran out of room in my GB.
