Hi All,

Im having some troubles and getting cloudy here regarding filter configuration.

I would like to have a radial flow filter :thumbleft: Rob Bob Style :thumbright: , small and portable.

Problem Im having is that I cant seem to find 45 degree elbows from the hardwares from where am at.

I am from the Philippines where so many things aren't around and if they are they cost a fortune.

Niweiz, anyone have any suggestion on DIY stuff?

Thanks.

MARK

Just use 90 degree elbows, it doesn't make that big of a difference.

You can also heat your PVC with a torch and bend it.

The trick is to fill it with sand before heating the plastic. Normally, the pipe would pinch in areas where it is bent, but the sand prevents that. When the pipe is cool you just drain out the sand.

The sand and a heat gun work very well. Try electrical and drain supply...they should carry 45's.

You should also be able to buy fittings online reasonably cheaply.. Often online places have a wider range than physical shops as 45's aren't that popular and waste shop shelf space.

Do you need a 45 degree bend or are you using two 45s to make a 90 degree turn?

Hi Stu,

I am planning to have the a 90 with 2 45's, I'm wanting to have less restriction on flow.

Depending on the style of pipe you are using this can actually increase the friction losses not reduce them.

Pipe systems that have sharp 90d bends (PVC pressure pipe for example) it can be useful to use two 45s. Other pipe systems have fittings that are designed and manufactured to offer less resistance to flow and if using them it is better to use one 90d bend (PVC DWV or Poly weld systems).

To further clarify.

A DWV bend that has a radius to diameter ratio of about 1:1 has less friction resistance than two 45d bends that are sharp bends but also less friction resistance than 2 45d bends with a radius to diameter ratio of 1:1.

Before Charlie, Sleep and others start laughing becuase that probably didn't clarify anything...

One swept DWV 90d degree bend is always better than two 45d bends.

Even if those 2 45d bends are also DWV bends.

Thanks Stuart - I'll use that in my next build with 90 and 50 DWV's :)
