Hi everyone,

I've managed to clear out a corner in my garage and thought I'd give a backyard aquaculture setup a go.

I have very limited space, you can see I have 2 IBC's a 500 litre Bunnings tank with a 200 litre tank in the middle the Bunnings tank has 50 litres of Kaldness K1 with 3 airdiscs to provide a Moving bed Biofilter, in side that tank is my home bred radial solids separator, and ATM I have a sump of to the side with my original elcheapo submersible, I have tried to use the spare fittings and pipework I have at home..later I will get a smaller pump.

Pic 1. Solids separator.

Pic 2. Solids seperator inside MBBR.

Pic 3. Side view of complete setup. Sump in front of Solids Separator and Moving Bed Biofilter.

Cheers.

Hi EB,

I would like to do what I have been trying to do before our stupid weather stuffed me up, we really haven't had a summer here, yet 3 years ago, this and last week sometime, we had our hottest day on record... I think it got up to 46. something.
6 months Rainbows and 6 months Barra, is the plan...again...

I might give some Murray Cod a go as well. I'm not sure, but I reckon I'm expecting a 18 month grow out time with them.

Running just an aquaculture setup in my backyard,(garage) will be something completely new to me...I can dump about 10 per cent of the water on the front garden, and continue with putting the waste solids around the garden as usual. I still want to keep my original barra and trout beds going...One of the main reasons I put this down the garage is to see if I can't get some temperature stability into the system, another is the constant noise of the aerator is not effecting the neighbours down here.

We'll see if it works out. I'll give it a go anyway.

Cheers.

Looking good BD and I hope it works out well.
Murray cod will not take 18 months I dont think, just judging from the growth rate of my few in an aquarium in the shed.

What type of feed do you feed your's with?

Does anyone know where I can get some Murray cod fingerlings at reasonable prices?
