OK, some of you are probably from the east coast. We Western Australian aboriginal people have gilgies and kurnacks in this state, and not bloody introduced yabbies with their inherant diseases which threaten our gilgies, kurnaks and maron.

Yes Zman, usually the male has to be bigger than the female so he can physically role her over

The female is/was so small so im thinking it may not have been in the batch Rupert gave me. How long do they take to reach breeding age? (I think i have had them for 6 months any chance this was a baby yabbie that is mature now?)

I have only 1 male and 1 female yabbie at the moment in the IBC tank lets hope for some babies :D

I have hd them in my system at home and in the school system. I have a creek run through my block and the year before last it was pretty dry so I dug all the gilgies I could find out of the bank before the ants found them when I saw it was not going to rai for some time. They werehappy in my tank for the summer before I put them back into the creek when the creek flowed again. Unfortunatley I did not do it this year and with the big dry we had we now have nno life in the creek at all. Not even gambusia at the moment (which is a good thing). Even the frogs are quiet.

Gilgies are burrowers. During summer, if the water source dries out, the gilgies retreat into their burrow. Can be many meters long. Dug into the water table also
