Culled & smoked the last 3 trout for the season, all around the 350g mark. Also discovered that using a blowtorch is a much easier way to get coals started than firelighters!

Also restocked with 15 barra fingerlings from Golden Ponds @ $5 each. They were a bit lethargic and seemed to have a white tinge on their bodies - is that fungal (see red circle)?

I salted the tank to 3.5ppt just in case. I hope they make it through the night!

whoa!! Barra! Super keen to find out how they're going to go in your system.
Hope the SP fingerlings are kept separate from the Barra just in case.

Good luck!

How are the fish doing Fuzzy? Have they settled down and recovered?

Regards, Martin.

Well, they are still alive. They just float around like they're in a haze - which is better than floating upside down I suppose. I've been spoilt by those excitable trout!

Hi Charlie!

Google says juvenile barras have the stripe. I couldn't find anything linking it to stress.

The water temp has been around 24c, which might be a bit low. We're expecting a few stinkers in Perth over the next week, so if they haven't perked up by the weekend I'll up the salt to 6ppt just to be sure.

Hiya Fuzzy, I'll be watching with interest to see how they go.
How big would you expect the fish to get come harvest?

Don't know - this is my first barra season. I'll be happy if they reach the same size as the trout (350g).

Here's hoping for a long hot summer!

The barra are settling in well now. Instead of trying to all hide down the bottom of the IBC, they drift around half way down. They also no longer freak out when they see me - a good sign.

Hey Fuzzy, do people also freak out when they see you? I mean maybe it's not just the barra that need time to get used to you... ;)

MartinC: With people it's more of a "point-and-laugh" than "freak out" ...

First floater today. No sign of fungal growth, might have just been this bipolar weather we've been having.

There's a lot of stringy algae in the tank though, thanks to the morning sun. I've covered it up with cardboard until i have time to build something more permanent.
