)Just did a test on fish tank, gh 120 ,kh 40, ph6! ,no2 .5 ,no3 40,nh3 and nh4 0. then tested sump tank ( after GBS ) ,tests were gh 120 ,kh 200 ,. ph 7 ,no2 1 ,no3 80, nh3 and nh4 0, (,.)Question im askin is which of the above is nitrate, nitrite ,and ammonia? Does this mean my GBS are working? Temp was 13.5 when I did tests! And my ph is probably too low on both readings? :? very :?

NO3 is Nitrate, and readings of 40-80 are fine.
NO2 is Nitrite, and while a 0 reading is preferred, 0.5 - 1 is OK
NH3 is Ammonia, and a 0 reading is great.
NH4 is Ammonium, but I've never seen a test for it.
pH of 6 is too low. pH of 7 is great.

The real question is: Are you using dip-strip tests, or drop-and-test-tube tests? (And if drops, be sure to shake the chemicals well.) A number of us have found the dip-strip tests to be unreliable/inconsistent/inaccurate. I would not expect your readings to vary that much between one part of your system and another.

Thanks JP,my tester does nh3 and nh4 as a single test, uses 3 chemicals in 5mm of water, the other tests are duhh I guess dip strips! thought the difference would (could) be cos the GBS are working! I think another acronym? for AP could be amateur plumbers! :D .

Most of us use the drops-n-tubes kit from Aquarium Pharm. So far, none of the brands of strip tests are much good. Granted, they are soooo easy to use, but there's something to be said for accuracy.

the strips can take a few secconds to reach the actual result colour and if left too long can change again (i.e if they dry out )

so all in all there is quite a few variables to consider when using them

Promoting APS??// Were having an open day in september for Sustainable Living! Its cos where connected to the grid(electric) but selling and buying from it! (18 panels for solar power) . Supposedly saved 277kg of carbon in the month its been running! Getting back on topic, its a great chance to promote AP .! (If my system was running properly!) Went out on monday to buy 25 trout at 2$ each (100 ml long)but they had all (700) died that night !(pump failure!) Having probs here ATM with pumps as well! Addicted to AP now (thanks Joel!)so will battle on! :?
