Oh, I should mention that I have done hardly anything setting this system up. I grew the seeds and looked after the fish. H did everything else from designing the set up, ordering and all the work. I'm really proud of him.

LOL joel. You know H used your manual religiously. He took it with him when he went out in case he saw something he wanted to buy and he could check "the Manual" first. It really helped him a lot. So thanks for your help from so far away.

Is there a seed exchange here?

Joel, I'm not using the bricks now. I didn't need them.

Thanks for the info on the testing VB.

I'll have to buy a nitrate tester. Can someone tell me the best test kits to buy. We have little dropper bottles at the moment. Are there any strip tests? Any brand names would be appreciated.

Seed exchange posts HERE.

Many have found strip tests to be unreliable. Once you get the hang of doing the 'flick' to get the vials to the right level - drop testing is pretty quick, easy and reliable. Most of us buy master test kits because it is an economical way to get ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and PH test in one. About $35 from meomory from online suppliers. Can't remember the place - but if you search on the forum for 'aquarium pharmceuticals' you will find posts saying where to get the master test kit.

Forest there is recent discussion that the test strips aren't really up to the job. There seems to be some discrepancy between the readings with strips and titration kits. We don't have a test kit at all, so someone else should be able to help you.

yeah, it's about that. I started this thread on March 18. We got the tanks last Tuesday.

I'll remember that, VB.

Just another Q. When everything is cycled, how often should we feed the fish? Do we push the feed and monitor the system with tests or do we feed to a regular schedule?

SP fingerlings should be fed 3 times a day, then cut back to twice/day when they start taking full sized pellets.

SP tend not to over eat

There are some here

I just use a normal one and let it float in the tank, should be able to get one from a chemist if no aquarium place near you - just need the temperature scale on the inside of the glass tube rather than the type mounted on a piece of timber
