I had a visit from troutman on Saturday and am now the proud owner of 50 trout. I forgot how much fun they are after two years of only having silver perch. Only issue is the water temperature with the last few days hitting 30 degrees the water temp peaked at 24.5 today. I have been running the pump all day (usually on a 30m on 30m off timer) to ensure plenty of oxygen and cranked up the backup air. The temp drops to about 20 by morning and I have been adding ice to the tank which lowers the temp about another degree. Forecast is for 3 more days of 30 then it drops to 25 and the night time temp is lower also. If they get through the weekend I should be in the clear :fish:

We've eaten a few silver perch as well. They taste great. Still have 33 in the second system of varying sizes. Some might be ready before they go off the feed in winter and the rest will another summer. Will be restocking with some fingerlings in October.

The little helpers were very excited about the arrival of our trout

Looking forward to seeing your new system develop at the new place too

No worries rod. I run the ac/dc backup air pump that came with my byap system constantly. When the pump is running it is probably additional to the DO requirements of the fish however in the case of a power outage it can keep the fish alive for up to 10 hours. A must have investment in my opinion. It has saved my fish a number of times over the past couple of years

Good stuff Ben when I read your thread from start to finish I see you were asking the same questions I am asking now, thanks for your help
Ps I have been running my air stones on full since I've set up.the sytem the reason I ask is because I read in one of your threads you said you cranked it up is that because you were running it on half or 3/4 or you added more air when it got hotter. .

G'day sheepy, yep I am running two separate systems both with 1000l tanks and both with 1000l of growbed. The trout are going well so far. I'm thinking of putting In a radal flow filter on the trout tank as 50 is a lot of trout for a 1000l tank. Have been away for a few days so hopefully they are still ok.

The 30 silver perch in the other tank are still cranking along well too

good to see mate. be intrested to see how they go as i have the same setup on the way. First thought was thats a fair few trout for the body of water size. but if you can do it why not. Is there a ratio of fish to grow media to try and stick to?? as i would hate to over stock and start lossing some.

Yes the ratio to try and stick to is 1 fish per 20 to 25 litres of growbed volume. Eg for 1000L of growbed volume the max number of fish would be 40 - 50. You also need to consider how many fish will comfortably grow out in the fish tank without being too cramped

Update time. Things are ticking along nicely. SP have slowed down now but still feeding morning and night. Image
This system doesn't get enough light and I am currently batting with white fly. The sticky traps have greatly decreased the number though. There are still 33 SP in here some of which are big enough to eat.

The trout system is going great guns and have 47 trout left. Lost two jumpers out of the tank and one unexplained death. The plants are cranking at the momentImageImage
Recently divided my rhubarb from the dirt garden and put half into a growbed. So far so good
