At some point with all the money invested in a system you just have to say; "I am done with Jimmy rigging all this stuff" that's the conclusion i came to when I bought my small cone bottom tank.
I still think its fin to tinker around with all this stuff. But it gets old sometimes when you realize the money you spent trying to make something work half assed.. As opposed to spending it on something that will work better and have less labor involved in managing it. ;)

New K1 type media arrived today. I have 2 of the 5 boxes installed, and it looks pretty good. I'm going to let this go for a few days and see how it goes.
Here's what almost $900.00 worth of plastic looks like.

K1 or K1 style?

Thought about getting a cubic foot for doing my sump on the 65 gallon acrylic tank. So far all that tank now is doing is growing white fuzz because the tank has no fish or water flow.

So I looked through the glossary part of the forum to try and find out what this K1/MBBR is that you speak of, my two questions are, what is this stuff, and what is it for?

MB3. best price I could find...but still more money then anything I've bought for the entire RAS system. I guess technically, the entire order of steel siding and roofing was more, but that was 160 pieces of steel that weighed almost a ton. This was 4 boxes of plastic. Sure looks pretty rolling around inside my mbbr filter though. :D

It's an engineered plastic media that is used in AP, RAS, and water treatment systems. Primarily as a bio filter to hold large amounts of nitrifying bacteria to convert Nitrites(harmful) to Nitrates(harmless and beneficial in an AP system. Their shape allows maximum bacteria growth, easy cleaning (by adding additional air), and they don't stick together or clog up easily. They are the perfect design and shape for their intended purpose. That said, they're too damn much money for something that they probably make for $2.00 a cu ft.

People have used plastic bottle caps, toy soldiers, plastic pellets, scrubbies, and lots of other items that all can work, but not as well as these guys.

Cool! that's something that I will have to look into when I get my IBC system up and running finally. Though it will probably take a lot of trying to convince my better half about..... :pale: Thoguh she may like the plastic army man idea! :)

Not sure that they have a greater surface area than HDPE pellets Chris. :)
