How easy or difficult is it to grow Hops, JB? I have a home-brewing son who tells me I should be doing it - growing hops, that is. From what I have read it seems it prefers a cool climate.

PLJ - Hops are very easy to grow. They are in the cannabis family and are exceptionally tolerant and insect resistant. Granted, some varieties grow better then others in certain conditions. I grow Cascade and Centennial Varieties.

They like a lot of nitrogen and organic matter in the soil. They need a lot of water when producing cones, about an inch a week. Wicking beds may work well in drier regions. I have no experience with that.

Training is easy. Wrap two bines in opposing helices around the twine and they will do the rest.

They grow from rhizomes, and require a dormant period where they will need to be cut back to ground level. I top dress with composted horse manure after cutting them back.

17 ft trellis with this years hops.

Thanks, J.B., I reckon I could follow those instructions. I just need to get hold of some rhizomes in order to get started.

JB - Just got back on the forum again. Moved from Tampa to WPB, so further into the tropical south I go! I am going to model my new system after yours. You're growing hops to?!?! I idol you!

If you don't mind, I am going to be picking your brain on PVC piping sizes, structural mesaurements and sizes, etc. In the meantime, I hope you're enjoying some of this seasons hops in some newly crafted beer!

Cheers!
