All seem happy & have full stomachs after a week without any food
All levels normal again this evening.

Took my kids to the park yesterday & happened to over hear one boy asking my 5 yr old son if he had any pet fish, to which Ollie replied "we have lots & we kill them & eat them". The looks of horror from nearby parents was priceless.

Some nice looking trout coming along there...

I know this technically didn't happen as I didn't get any photos, but I culled 3 trout last week, the biggest was just over 300 gr & the other a touch under. First meal from the system very nice.

Up date to not so new system in Crib Point

Moved (across the road) to larger block/smaller house at the start of the year. Set up the AP system put the clay in the grow bed filled the tank had the system cycling for 4 - 6 weeks then decided it needed to be moved. Managed to move the grow bed with all the media & plants in situ, refilled the tank & had 5 gold fish ticking things along for a while.
Built a 2nd system (chift pist) from 2 ibc's & let that cycle for a while.
2 weekends ago put 60 trout in (30 in each).
Last friday in the pouring rain noticed a floater in the ibc system & decided to drain the water level a bit to see if there were any other issues as it was difficult to see to the bottom of the tank. Found 14 more dead trout.
Put remaing live trout from ibc system into BYAP system & re routed plumbing for grow bed, & left ibc system off line. Don't really know what went wrong as all water test were fine & system had been running for some time & seemed to have cycled
Now have 45 trout in 1000 ltr tank with 1 byap grow bed & blue grow bed (see pics)

The byap system now with the 45 trout seems to be doing fine now. all tests are ok trout are active & feed aggressively.

Do i have enough filtration for 45 trout in a 1000 ltr tank

Brings back nightmares of training at CERBERUS!

The volume of the FT is not the issue, you need to be concerned with the filtration capacity. If you've got 45 trout, then you should have 45x20 = 900L of GB media (minimum, for a mature system)

i believe i have 1050 litres grow bed media so should be ok. but will keep a close eye on things any way.

Well, up to a certain point that is true - 45 fish in 1000L is still a lot fish in a small space


Absolute minimum. If he's running F&D, 45 fish will stink up that water pretty quick, between pump cycles. Good chance that's why the other 15 died !

Just to clarify, in the ibc system there were 30 fish of which fifteen died, 550 ltres filtration, & 1600 ltrs of water between ibc sump & ibc tank, running constant flood. That system was new.
The byap system is in its second season & now has the 2 grow beds. one with clay the other a mixture of scoria & river pebbles.

I wont be trying to get the trout to any great size . i plan to cull them along the way as they get to an acceptable plate size.
