Kill one of my shinbukan this morning...
Yesterday I did a tank drain because it was very murky still from gravel fines..Transfer the fish to a tub..One dead fish this morning..I guess it was a shock of transfer and maybe the rainwater I filled the tub with wasnt very oxygenated...went into HSM and did a 50% water change and ran the pump to aerate..All the fish perked up abit thou wasn't that happy to greet me..

Refill the main tank and ran pump all day on aeration bypass only..Late this afternoon I added some de-chlorinated stuff so I could get the goldies back in the tank tonight..

All seem to be happy to be back in the main tank...playing follow the leader

I did some temperature checks and found the main tank was 16C compared to 14C outside air temp...The pump must give off a fair amount of heat..

So 1 dead fish....I can only symphasize with the losses some others have had..
:(

What sort of pump are you using LB? I had heard of someone else with a pump that was heating the water a fair bit.. And is the water temp in your system similar to water temp out of the system, rather than air temp?

Theres info somewhere around about trout, it appears that they can tolerate higher temps than what most people think, as long as the DO is very high.

grow out for them should be NO problem over winter, and there are skads of places to buy them and they come quite big.

I'm really happy with my trout so far, some of them have doubled in size since I got them in March and so I dont think I'll have any problems growing them out before summer. My water temp is around 14C at the moment, the fish are eating well and loving life.
Thanks to Troutman for the idea, I can recommend having trout to anyone down south.

LB, I didn't have any airstones until the temps were right up and fish got quite big. If you have a decent return into your fish tanks thsat would cover most of your DO rquirements I would think. Use some sort of back up airation to cover yourself thru power failures.

Update
Have completed the greenhouse and starting to get the system in order before I order the fishies..
Greenhouse is a timber frame (with body corporate 'misson brown' colour) with duratough film.

On the to do list :
- support pipework
- place some mesh on back wall and part of roof for climbers.
- setup battery backup for sump pump return of water and air pump
- build a door

:) LB

Yep EB the Duratough is a tough film...I am glad I use their batten tape..it made life a lot easier..
To install I worked from the centre, stretchhhhhhh like there was no tomorrow. The tape held the film even under tension and allowed the film to be removed and retension over and over again to get the required finish. The battens are really there just to hide the white tape..
Actually did all the film myself..

I thought from a quick first look that you must have used some type of panelling, there was just a couple of ripples in one corner that gave it away, but I had to look hard to find them.
