Long time no post, but the vegies have been doing well however I have some bad news to report.
I am in need of some new fish.

Had some concreters redoing my kitchen floor for the last week and they tripped the power - no power for 24 hours and no one home to check on the fishies means everybondy is now floating.

The week before I had bought myself a filleting knife as I was about to try my first Silver Perch - but it was not to be.

Anyway it's another 25 dead Silver Perch and around 10 Tilapia.

So if anyone is about to order some fish for their system in Perth and want to beef up their order, please let me know. Or even if you know of a good source of fish - open to varieties.

Nice to see you back Fizzy.... bummer about the fish

Take it if you were going to fillet them, that they had got to a fair size?

Bummer! Thats why I'm a big fan of dedicated hard wired electric circuits with backup.

i feel for your loss Fizzy.

been there too many times to want to remember.

i decided i wont purchase any more fish before my backup power is sorted. better off investing the $ in purchasing the backup supply imo.

consider this fizzy, as i would hate to see this happen to you again. for your and the fishes sake.

hey fizz, if you happened to measure any of your fish, we're collecting size v length data for future reference, so we could benefit a bit from your hard work and fishie tlc

N70ZZ batteries - $100 ea.

12v - 240v 300w Inverter - $80

4 Amp Battery Charger - $40

Alive fish - Priceless.

Maybe buy some urea and fishless cycle the system until we get back into the 20's of water temps?

OBC,
Would I then plug my pumps into the inverter permanantly or would I have something else plugged in as a backup? Something like another water pump splashing or air pump?

Is the N70ZZ a deep cycle? Sounds familiar to my landy batteries.

Has steve previously spoken about a device that can switch on a battery backup when the power goes out?

steem,
no measurements unfortunately.
My scales had died and I didn't actually weigh them until 2 days later (mmm fresh smelly memories). I have photos but no scale.

Sorry for the late reply, dont know how I missed it :(

I was running my pumps from the inverter, but decided to run the 20w air pump only. I have the inverter capacity to run the pumps again if need be in an emergency.

N70ZZ is a landcruiser battery, it does not need to be deep cycle, because it will sit there fully charged 99.99% of the time. The occasional discharge wont hurt them overly (compared to paying $500 for an equivalent deep cycle), as long as they are recharged immediately. Leaving them flat kills them very quickly.

There is a device that switches the mains to an inverter upon a power failure - I prefer to know that my backup system is running all the time.

Why are my only posts about fish kills!

Can one of the mods please change my name to "killer of Silver Perch"

Another batch off to fishy heaven.

This time - once again was a lack of oxygen, the time on the pumps reset itself somehow and had switched off - Fish didn't float straight away so didn't see them upside down on the bottom.

Have checked all the ph, nitrates etc and all within good specs.

Next time must have a permanent backup before buying fish again.
fizzyj aka killer of silver perch
