Hi again
I'm looking at putting some floating pots in my tank but my tank is fully covered with shade cloth and I'm not sure what would grow with so much shade and our climate in Bunbury/ Perth.
Anyone got something growing or suggestions on what I could try

G'day hezzy. Looking good mate. I currently have 47 trout in my system and I feed about 3 handfuls of feed morning and night. However I test how hungry they are by putting in a small handful first. If they smash the feed I put in a bit more. If there is uneaten food just scoop it out after 5 mins. Best way to increase the feed rate is by small steps each day. This will allow your system to adjust as the nutrient load increases.

Because I didn't feed my fish for two weeks, I only have 1 lonley goldfish out of five, turns out trout like the colour orange lol, oh well they did their job as starter fish anyway.
I think the last one will try swim high speed into the side of the tank so he can end his pain an not end up like his mates

Okay so I've tested my system again, and since the last tom I tested a week ago my reading are the same other than the nitrates have gone up, so should I up feed or is two tablespoons enough for 67 fish

Are you human?: it is probable

Hi Hezzy, the main way to gauge if you're feeding enough is to see if there is any feed left in the tank after 5mins. If they smash the food and it is all gone very quickly you can feed more, if there is food left over (scoop it out so it doesn't become an ammonia source) then you can feed a little less.

Changing the feed pattern should be done over a number of feeds to see an average of food left over as the fish can eat less or more during one feeding due to environmental circumstances like if the fish got a fright then they might be off their food for one or two feeds.

If the nitrates keep climbing then you want to put more plants in to use up all the nutrients that are being produced.

I hope this helps.

Regards, Martin.
