have read that die off of bac starts at 30 mins and is almost complete at 4hrs, but that would be for a cannister filter. As long as your beds were wet and not completely flooded i'd say you're fine :)

Ammonia has dropped from 1.0 to 0.5 in 7 hours. Bacteria must still be OK. :whew:

You must have caught the fishies playing with the coral shortly after it happened. Glad the balance is coming back into line.

Those tires are from a well known international brand (US based), but due to the size are not very widely used. (My luck to buy a luxury sport sedan back when everyone else was getting SUV's.) I ordered another pair from another manufacturer, just as well known, for $50 less per tire, and with a 70k warranty.

Have you harvested anymore fish for the girls, or are the fish still a little undersized for the table? I know they can't wait for some more!

Kevin

I think they are still undersized to eat. And husband would like fillets, thank you very much. They are really only 1/3 - 1/4 pound right now. I think they ought to be more like 1/2 pound (~250g) at a minimum, or 3/4 pound for fillets. Cleaning the little buggers takes a careful touch.

It does concern me that if we had a 12 hour power-outage, I'd be having problems. I think after this initial batch is eaten, I will run at a little lower stocking rate. Gives me better margin that way.

have seen over at home depot this nitrifying bacteria in a bottle. it was $25 or so, it is for pond use, it said on the bottle "takes start up time from 4 weeks to 4 days".

i am surprised that i have not seen this on the board yet, a bacteria in a bottle, so to quick start our AP. or have a back up for whan are systems start flippin out

Oh yes, it has been discussed here several times. There are only 70K posts. You mean you haven't read all of them?!?

Most of us like the economical solutions. Getting filter muck from a friend is free. At this time of the year, if I actually killed -all- my bacteria (doubtful), I could steal from my pond filter. In winter, Dad's aquarium. Really though, if you don't kill off everything (like with bleach), recovery isn't that bad. A few days at worst.

Ammonia and nitrite are 0. Nitrate is 150. Jungle portion of the growbeds has been growing very well.

Good job JP!

So the sand column was the thing that removed all that nitrate?

Well, either the sand columns or the Jungle portion of the plantings getting in gear. It's hard to know which.
