That really sucks. Well I guess I'll stick with what I have.

A quick update about the greenhouse recovery. So far, so good!

Hi Rob,

....seems everything's back up and running!!

I wonder about your SWIRL-FILTER:

On this forum there seems to be a consensus, that a RF-Filter does/would outperform a Swirl-Filter.
Your clip about the SF shows quite a lot of solids in the water and settling!

Maybe you could actually do a test - should be pretty simple to convert to RFF and back....

Cheers,

thjakits

The RFF will outperform a swirl, but this tank that I got is too small for the amount of flow that goes through it so the solids won't settle out if it were an RFF. Since my goal was to reduce the solids but not eliminate them, the swirl filter will work fine. The media beds will catch the rest of them.

I don't know that you'll ever want to do this but If you decide you want to remove more of the solids, using static K1 works better than an RFF did for me and wouldn't require much in the way of alterations. The jury is still out on the effect on the nutrient levels since I'm using this for an RAS setup not AP.

Scotty,

How do you clean your K1? Back flush, like a pool filter?

Shut off the inflow and outflow, this sends the water from the Fish Tank via a different overflow to the MBBR filter instead. Turn on the air to the manifold at the bottom of the barrel, give the K1 a stir to loosen things up and run the air for a few minutes, then flush through the waste drain.

I think you could do this without air by lowering the water level and pouring a bucket of water in to stir things up, then drain.

This is the way the filter is setup, the inner 5 gallon bucket is now filled with static K2 which floats(K1 should work fine as well). The inflow is coming from the left into the 15 gallon barrel then goes down and back up through a 5 gallon netpot attached to the bottom of the 5 gallon bucket. The flow comes up through K2 that's floating in the 5 gallon bucket and this traps the solids. The flow goes through the atrium grate and down into the 55 gallon barrel. The 55 gallon barrel outer portion is where I will eventually have another MBBR filter (it already has a manifold for air setup). The outflow on the right is now covered with an atrium grate and it goes to an MBBR. The flush out drain I was talking about is in the 15 gallon barrel that surrounds the 5 gallon bucket and the air manifold is a ring at the bottom of the 15 gallon barrel that sits directly under the 5 gallon bucket.

I should mention that space is an issue. It would be much easier to just do a tank of static K2 with only 2 barrels but I wanted to have the MBBR incorporated as well to save space.

Probably more than you wanted to know :dontknow:

Adding a very simple fingerling basket to the main fish tank.

Seems to be OK. I know in our office, they block YouTube. ;-)

Maybe this link will work? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1DN3DaW448

Link doesn't work with old iPad ! But I did see this brilliant - as always - idea by youtubing from a browser. It's ok, as I found out last week that YouTube has got very picky about apps!

Hi Rob, I'm going to be making some strawberry towers and I was just wondering what size of pump you are using to supply the water to yours? Also, what's the water flow like?
