Jim,

I have really enjoyed and been motivated by reading through this thread.

A couple questions: Never saw the final answer on your GB with perlite... Decent media? Mixed with something? Just looking for something a little better than straight river rock in a good size system I am starting to build. Trying to be a little weight conscious as well as cost conscious. Hydroton is just to rich for my budget.

Second question: I'm building a good sized hoop house and planning to cover in 6 mil UV stabilized sheeting... supposed to last 4 years. You made the switch to poly sheeting. Definitely pricier... Worth the money? Why not plastic? Also, roughly, what is the radius you are bending there?

Thanks,

CB

Hi Jim;

I'm also interested in your choice of roofing material...can you tell me why you selected clear plastic over the white alternative? Doesn't that make it a bit too hot/bright in there?
Thanks,
Arran

IMO.... perlite is the biggest pain in the butt... and entirely unsuitable for flood and drain...

As a seedling mix, or wicking bed... in a standard hydro mix with vermiculite... OK...

But strictly as a 75:25 - vermiculite:perlite mix...

F&F uses such a mix in a couple of his beds... with a modified "flood" sequence... so as not to over-water...

On it's own... I wouldn't use it ...

Hi went to visit Jim and wilma yesterday plants are doing great but his fish that were got same time as mine are only 1/2 the size and when you put feed in the were only lackluster at taking it also all his filters were filling each week with a stinking stuff [brown slime ] and the tanks had a off smell [he cant smell after his accident ]
he has been using that organic food from brizzy
so he had a bag of barra pellets there and yesterday started using them today fed 4 times and they are jumping out of the water
So careful you dont get an amonia spike with the sudden increase of food

Good chance the "organic" feed is "off" by now... it doesn't contain preservatives like other pellet feed...

what's the protein content on the bag Jim? I reckon if it was made for silvers it may only be 30 - 35% wheras trout want the 45% stuff.
