OBO, I had to consider the amount of reflected heat coming into the house as well! The majority of the house is surrounded by paving, thanks to the previous owners, and I would rather have shaded pavers than have to water and mow grass.

Chappo, what do a HD and a blue heeler have in common ?? They both have to ride in the back of the ute after a hard days work!!

Anyway came home from work today everything looking good, no deaths, plants or yabbies!!!

Using clear laserlight, and covering in summer with shadecloth would have been alright :geek:

That's a great reason. Just remember when your kids have grown up and you have retired , you can always get another toy.
I mean the bike not the wife. :D

Quick update...

All going well, yabbies in roe, no deaths, waiting for Barra, plants getting bigger and greener.
Have planted tomatoes, onions, coriander, spinach, pak choy, peas, cauliflower and a blueberry as a trial. :?

Have created quite the interest at work and have "displayed" the system to a few others, who are more than keen. They are FIFO miners and LOVE the idea of not having to worry about watering whilst they are away. With any luck they'll be down the BYAP shop soon and get well and truly hooked. :D

Cheers

Lucky

The yabbies were in roe! But now I can find no "little" ones running around the tank, I'm having a guess that they were invited to dinner by the bigger yabbies.

Couple of Questions for any gurus out there. :)

I have put extra lengths of PVC in the tank to allow hidy holes, are there any other suggestions for extra protection/hidy holes/removal of little ones?

How do you tell male and female yabbies apart?

Any other tips for getting babies? (Yabbies that is!!!)

The side of the tank is starting to get a build of algae, long stringy stuff. Is this OK? Water is clear.

Lucky

Put an onion bag around a clean rock or pvc this allows the little babies a place to hide where mum can't get them.
The algae is a living thing and will settle in time. Things that eat algae and keep sides of tank cleaner are pygmy perch, goldfish, silver perch.
The undersides of the yabbies are different you can tell by the dot at the base of their last legs. I could show you, the males grow faster if separated from the females. (Boys are otherwise easily distracted by the girls.)

Its a shame we dont build many houses in Australia to accept the green roofing there would be plenty of room up there!!! we had a 1/2 ton solar system on our old Queenslander, but I supose you would have some neighbours that wouldn't quite unerstand about what you wanna do and complain

Haven't had any problems with gilgies eating the goldfish, they are just too quick.

I've been away for a while, managed to visit OBO and view his awesome system. Thanks OBO :D
Some fantastic ideas you've given me, just need a block the same size as yours..... :?

So anyway... came home, and the water in one system (1000l x 1 growbed, placed in partial sun under the growbed, approx 25 yabbies and ,assuming they have not been eaten, 3 SP fingerlings) is very green and murky, threw in a bit of seasol but it is still green 5 days later, have not fed for 5 days. Ph is high 8.8, ammonia is somewhere between .25/.5 ppm, others are all zero. Can't see if I have any casualties, hoping not.

The other system is fine, undercover, have added goldfish to help. All looking good. :D

Any suggestions??

Lucky

Increase the water flow through the growbed if you can, and add a whole heap of aeration. Hold the seasol too. Once it starts to clear see what the ph is doing.

Oh, and your welcome

Good Morning All.

An update and question time.

Generally all going well :D Fish are doing fine, have lost one or two over the last few months, others are going great guns, feeding four times a day and very active.

The yabbies were in roe in the other tank, but one SP that has managed to elude the net is living a fine life and looking very healthy.

The concern I have is that when I put in seeds or seedlings, they tend to stay alive but not grow very much :?: Lots of stunted growth. Have been adding seasol every month.

The exception being sweet potato, tomatoes and rhubarb, the tomatoes get to a great size, looking very tasty and then the skin splits, the rhubarb stalks never get red before the leaf dies off (plenty of grow back though) which means I don't get any rhubarb crumble :( The sweet potato is going crazy.

We are getting some hot winds here at the moment and the plants are getting some wind burn, could this contribute??

Any ideas on the stunted growth??

Lucky
