Not making a living at it but hoping to show others how they can subsidize their income.

is he a part of some university or on his own?
in our country ppl don't even know hydro or little, so some kind off this would be pretty unreal for some. but still i plan to persist on my ideas
does joel sell systems or veggies?
i really do need a few more oppinions on how to start my buisness. i was thinking on starting up my system and start a local supply to known ppl to get their interest and to start the roomers
maybe setting up a website explaining what i do, promoting myself etc

i really have serious doubts in cooperating with my coledge, since they seem to stagnate and loving it for quite a few decades, and i'm afraid of the greedy bastards among them

any experiences on that part?

does joel have a personal site of his work?must google some more!---> hhehe it's backyardaquaponics.com didn't see it

Joel is not part of a university. He sells systems. You can look through this forum to see the systems he has built for people.

First, build up your experience by building a decent-sized AP system yourself. Thinking about doing this as a business is great and all, but if you don't have the experience in the technology, you are going to fail at this. It's pretty easy to kill the fish running at the higher stocking levels that we do. It's good that you have aquarium experience, but you need some true AP experience, too.

i agree, that's why i'm builiding my 5000L pond in the spring, for home cooking and learning
now i have a few years of experience in recirculative hydroponics, which gives me a little more confidence doing this

"keep the p words in mind", someone said :)

hello there

steve yes, i figured it out when i looked at the header of the page where it says "brought to you by Joel Malcom and the team"

as i said yesterday, and as u have pointed out, i've given them too much, and one platy and one scalare are down....i feel so shitty doing this as i could have prevented this, i knew i was giving too much, but i was just too confident in what the lable said...again:(

anyway, things gotta get moving so i removed 1/3 of water and replaced it with fresh one, things are still pretty dark(meaning i really gave them an OVERDOSE) but i'll dilute it some more in time

as for the plants, i think the foilar feeding had a positive effect, i think i noticed some more clorophylle in the leaves, we'll see what's the deal in a few days

i hope i haven't set back my system or kill even more fish, i can't tell yet
pfff....bad start off a day...valueable lesson but still, unnecessary

still, let's all have a good day, RIP fish

Bummer.

The labels are not written to take fish into account, regrettably. The other thing that is frustrating is that we don't all have access to the same products. So the concentration of chelated iron that I use might not be the same as the concentration of your chelated iron. And I still haven't seen "Seasol" on the shelves--the Aussies like to use that one.

yeah i know, very little info on the lables, it said only 3% Fe, organic so, i was playing on the organic side to not harm them
but as said, today when i was diluting the whole thing i really saw what a stupid thing i did, i raised EC for almost 1.0 point at the time, so no wonder this happened, even the plants can't take such off a raise in hydro.

stupid, stupid, stupid, stupid....

I think rather than look at the fish side of things, for sustainability it is best to look on the plant side since that is what is going to give you constant income. What I did was :

1. figure out how much income I need on a regular basis
2. Decide what veggies give the most income in your market in the shortest amount of time.
3. Figure out how many plants you need to generate the desired income.
4. Decide how much growbed volume you need to produce the amount of plants you want to grow.
5. Working backwards, decide how many lbs of fish you need to sustain that growbed volume.
6. Decide on the kind of fish for your market.
7. Calculate how many gallons of water you need to sustain that amount of fish.

You will be surprised really how small your fish tank must be to produce lots of veggies when done correctly. In my case, optimally it will take only 160 gallons of water to produce $250 - $300 income per month in theory. However I am doubling that amount of water to 320 gallons just to have a bit of buffer and to allow me to add more growbeds if things go as well as expected. Granted $300 income is not enough for most of us to live on, but where I work that is a decent wage for the local people thus that is what I base that on.

 molj

3% works out to 30,000 ppm per gram per liter

so you put in 30grams for 100 litres

i work this out to be 3000ppm?

i thing the usual concentrations uses are 1 - 2ppm?

happy for peeps to check the mathS ;)
