As previously noted, two of the four fish trying to die at this stage seem to have recovered, partially at least.

This fish, Charles, is an engineer-fish and is far too important to go and die with the other fish. He will do a better, faster, and more thorough job by himself, on the other side of the pond.

Sorry to hear about the loss of the expensive fish. It's gotta suck. But congrats on making progress.

Thanks Colum, yep in hindsight that was definitely the way to go, and I wouldn't have even considered going without one if I were picking up trout, but I thought a few koi and goldfish would be OK. Just too many, and for too long.... It was only a 5 minute drive, but the mucking around once I got home was the problem. I certainly won't make that mistake again.

Turns out only Charles didn't make it, the others today appear to be swimming slowly around the tank - for now.

Still sucky for the one fish that size to die. Koi aren't cheap either.

If you get some smaller koi, they'll grow quickly in AP. Well my goldies have anyway, can't have Koi here

Indeed, I've had a guilty conscience bugging me all night.

I'd never really intended to keep the koi, at least not all of them, as I figured selling some of the bigger ones would probably pay for a batch of silvers. Koi are such a dirty fish after all, I don't want my SP tasting muddy thanks to them. Still, it's not nice to know you're responsible for a fish death that could have been prevented.

My son's response? "Well Mum, I can't sell THAT one in my shop now..." He was quite excited to run a temporary koi shop I think!

Hopefully no further HSMs for a while now. There are pretty major storms in Perth at the moment so hoping the water return hasn't blown off the tank again - that will kill both fish AND pump otherwise. I think I've secured it well enough now, but there will be reinforcements made tonight just in case. Hurry up 5pm!!

An yer silver perch are much preferred over koi lol

Cheers Hezzy, in the words of Skipper the penguin "that's a number I can live with!".

Minimum order of SP is 25, so they will be fine I think. 1500L+ tank and 1000L of wet media should be plenty good for 25 SP. And I'm allowing a small fish margin for Kookaburra-related losses.
They will be much better when there aren't so many Koi and goldies scumming up the water anyway. I will try and move most of them along before putting my order in.

Does anyone know if big Koi will eat little SP? I know trout definitely do!

I'm going to put another mini system in my front atrium so I will transfer some of the existing fish into there as well. Just ornamental fish and plants I think.
Might have to start planning sooner rather than later on that one I think. The OH will be stoked with all the holes I have for him to dig when he gets back from QLD.

And I guess I should ask the mods to move this thread into Member Systems rather than newbie introductions. I'm still a newbie for sure, but I dunno how they prefer to have things set up?

in my experience big Koi will happily co-exist with small SP. My koi is well fed - not sure what will happen if they go hungry.

Thanks Gabe, I should have just PM'd you since you've probably got the biggest and most productive Koi pond of anyone around here :-)

It also reminded me that you said they don't muddy the SP taste too - perhaps a few will be allowed to stay on :-)

I think my son will make sure they are all well-fed. Stopping him from over feeding will be the bigger hurdle!

Looks like a great start katmac! A note with some of the plants, loofah gets aggressive with massive roots, and the need to spread out. Romanesco takes up a lot of space too. I grew it once. It was a lot of work for not a lot of produce.

Thanks Ron, I will maybe only try a couple of Romanesco then. I just thought my son might like them - broccoli is his favourite.
The loofah is going in the dirt because I figured it might be a bit gangly for the AP, and also not very pretty once it dies off. I will pop it down the side of the house where the roots won't be an issue - thanks for the heads up
