Can someone advise me of a better option for a DWC grow platform other than Styrofoam sheets? Any helpful input is gladly appreciated. Thank you.

Sure, for only 50,000 rupees I will send you the perfect solution/alternative for styrofoam. You're even allowed to resell the idea for an additional fee of 250,000 rupees. Awaiting your remittance ...... :)

Ahaa... I liked your cynical humour but I had found a solution for this problem incidentally today.. a very senior chemist professor who visited us today suggested an alternative... (thanks to Mr. Subramanian sir, a senior professor of some US Miami university, Masters in Botanical sciences) and I hope it would work really great.. but I know... it is an adventure, no one might have done that before.. please keep a watch of the updates. I really appreciate your interest and thanks a lot for that. :)

It is sad that no one else in the forum is answering.. I sometimes feel like closing my account in this forum and focus elsewhere. :(

PS: Sorry, I am not that rich to spend in 250,000 rupees (approx. $4000) for an idea from you... :( maybe my client can afford it.. but, you know... I would like to focus on cheap and easy way of/affordable Aquaponics.

PS2: Please watch my today's progress updates. :))

Back to the actual topic: I don't know what would be better than Styrofoam, since that's not my industry. However, there is a place a few towns over from me (from whom I have purchase two 500 gallon tanks) who has all sorts of different types of foam packing materials, and while most seem to do OK I find the closed-cell products to be more useful than the open-cell ones. Which should be no surprise.

I don't know all of their chemical compositions, but given that they're used for food-handling packaging (and since they're regulated by - I think - the FDA) I haven't lost any sleep over the issue.

If you are looking for an alternative to Styrofoam my first question would be "Why?", followed quickly by "What are your available options?"

Thanks so much for the link.. SolTun. I am reading through it.

We had thought about Bamboo as it is locally available... low cost... but then... fungi and molds would be a problem in the long run... someone warned. We get plenty of rains here.

Haha, if your bamboo raft is floating in water DWC style does it really matter if it rains a lot?

PLJ, good point.. I was thinking of keeping the bamboo raft on the structure without touching the water... to give that air gap... :)

This is what I purchased today for the DWC platform... per some expert advice... hope this would work..

Hi vkn,

Im happy for you to link to facebook but I would prefer you also add the images to the forum so not to direct traffic away from the forum. This is a memebers system category and needs to be updated this way please.

cheers

I avoid it too PJ, 'happy' was very poor wording haha. Having the images here gives people the choice. Same goes with blogs and photo bucket, members deserve the option. Dropping in once a month and posting a link to somewhere else doesnt really fit into forum critique and begs the question why the person is a member at all.
