I think it was worked out that the gravel takes about 50-60% of the hal barrel capacity.... so ... half barrel is 100ltr.... less say 50-60% ..... gives you between 40-50 ltrs of water for a half barrel growbed.

Plus then you don't have the half barrel completely filled with gravel, otherwise gravel will be spilling over the sides. Then you also don't fill it with water completely to the top of the gravel, it's a couple of centimeters below the surface.. So in reality you may only be flooding it with 25-30L of water in a half barrel.

well i found out today the hardway that using dads old irragation as the outlet of the pump may lead to it curling and falling out of the growbed this lead to the whole fish barrel empty when i got home from school luckily the fish found
a dip in the gravel which they could still get some water over there gills!!! what i have done is made a deeper well in the gravel if it happens again and i have raised the pump so that if the same scenario happens again they will be ok until my father or i see it.. bit of a bugger though i no iam lucky that they are all still alive and just swimming.

My soil garden is getting hit by frost, but my AP is higher and is just missing it.
