Hey guys  ,

I just joined AP madness and will start my system soon. I'm from Slovenia and think i have similar weather as you zsazsa. Your greenhouse and system really impressed me and i hope to build one in a future.

Looking forward for CEAJ and hope to be invited

I have reviewed the design of my passive solar greenhouse, completely redrawn the Sketchup modell. It was not accurate and was misleading at some points.

I think it will be updated in the IBC of Aquaponics but for those who cant wait for that, it can be downloaded from my website. If you need any info or customalisation to your location dont be shy to ask for it!

@ezaone: angle depend on your latitude, and local climatic situation. by rule of thumb it should be latitude + 10-15 degrees.

We are having a crazy spring! the -10s turned into +20s in just two weeks instead of two month! My system water is up to 19,75C which makes the trout extremely hungry, grow fast, and live on the limit allready. I would like to keep this temp till early july! Thats gonna be a hard job...

Aphis are active since two weeks, but I have found some ladybuggs to wash of those delighted smiles from their ugly faces. It only took two weeks last summer, it should be quick again. ;)

I had some serious ph issues again as we where low for a while. Ph buffer where all gone, but since evaoration kicked in and I had to refill the system with some wellwater we are back over 6 again.

The current trout stock is around 40 pieces, the big ones are should be over 500gr, we are close to geting some new fish within days, its gona be a set of trout and a set off catfish finally!

Hey zsazsa,

Have you noticed any kind of bio film on your barrel wall?

Do they need cleaning?

The reason I ask is , I have some fin tube solar collectors I'm thinking of using instead of a barrel wall. They would NOT have a glazing cover.

I dont know whats inside the barrels, I havent opened them. I guess nothing. There is nothing on the outsude for sure.

If you have space for a barrel wall use it! Its simple, its perfect, if the building design helps it it can do mirracle!

thanks for the reply zsazsa,

No room for a barrel wall :upset:

I'll have to settle for my fin and tube collectors. I'm not sure if they can take a cleaning if they get dirty. :dontknow:

The water temp is between 17-19C, while the air is 16-28C.

This is the time of the year when the greenhouse shows the mistake what I have made because i was not brave enough to fully believe my calculations can be good. I should have made the glass front steeper a bit. Because I haven't, now I have a little weaker performance in winter and it tends to overheat a bit in early spring and late authumn.

I have to keep the water under 20C because of the trout, but thankfully thats not a problem as we have cold nights (3-8C), so by opening the window for the night I can drop 2-3 degrees from the system water a night.
