I've inserted a little section of PVC in the standpipe for the spinach to raise the water level a bit.

We'll see if this does anything to revive the spinach.

season for most types of spinach is Autumn-Winter-Spring - mine go great in the AP up until mid-December then that is it until it cools off. The equivalent veg over summer are the Asian leafy ones - Pak Choy, Bok Choy etc etc. They are spring-summer-autumn and they don't mind a bit of humidity which I suspect would be typical of Sydney at this time.

Could I sow Bok Choy straight into the GB?

Yes, I had some go to seed, and they came up all around the original plants.

yep they should come up no problem as Guna notes.

my experience is that Bok Choy sometimes wont 'head' as compact from seed so I tend to transplant
Bunnings often have punnets with 2 plants per cell if you look closely or I raise them in soil punnets myself first.

Pak Choy, Gai lan / Kai-lan etc are all no problems and I just go from seed -
Red Dot stores over here in Perth carry the DT.Brown seeds for $1.50/packet,
else I use the Johnsons Taste of Asia, or last time got some from a local Asian store.

If Bok Choy / Pak Choy go a bit leggy (stem) you can still use leaves no problem.

I tend to keep my water level down a bit and regularly hand water with a watering can.
But I have expanded clay.

Hey Sophia. Was wondering how you did your light setup? Cost and materials? Where you were able to source parts. Im looking to do something very similar to you for the kids.

I bought my LED light strips from here
$11.25 X 2

But I ended up buying a power supply and dimmer switch. The guy who runs the website said he would have recommended a different product if he'd known what I was planning so stay tuned and I'll let you know what to buy.

Results from yesterday and today are:

pH = 7.2
Ammonia = 0
Nitrite = 0
Nitrate = 160plus

No fish yet. I found a place much cheaper than my local place that is happy to ship.

They sell 3-5cm long fingerlings for $2.50 ea as compared to $7.00 from my local place.

And shipping is only $20

So 50 fingerlings should be arriving Tuesday or Wednesday

Looking good! Can't wait to see yours kids staring through their looking glass at their new adventure! What a great way to introduce your girls to healthy living. Just don't let them get too attached to the fish or you may have trouble getting them to eat them. We raised about 13 head of cattle when my daughter was young, now she is vegan :dontknow:

Lol! :laughing3:

When we set out on the Aquaponics journey I bought the girls each a goldfish. There's only one that lived through the first week and white spot etc - "Dawn" is the pet fish and there's a very firm understanding that the ones in the shed are for eating.

Today we paid for 50 silver perch and they should be arriving on Thursday.

Most exciting thing that happened today (Aquaponically) is I bought this beauty and now have the fun job of figuring out how to turn it into a swirl filter.

Finally finished going through your build thread, and it's looking very good! It makes me wish I wasn't in class, but working on my greenhouse for my system.... Unfortunately I am in class, and I don't have the bricks I need to finish the foundation/floor, and I have my national testing tomorrow for my paramedic stuff that I need to study for :( so my system is being kind of neglected for today and probably tomorrow too.... Though I do need to at least take a level reading on the system to see where it's at. So maybe not complete neglect today!
