Yep , I have decided to go for year round fish with catfish being the main and I am growing more fond of murray cod as they grow. So no more trout or jade perch, been there and done that.

Yep they have thrived in the same community tank with the silvers and a couple of Bass for two years, and it gets down to 7C some mornings and up to 30C in summer

I think the African sharptooth catfish could be the ultimate AP fish. Can survive a large temperature range. Grows fairly fast (I stand corrected here). Apparently good eating when grown in clean water, and can survive in a system with hardly any aeration. In Fact can even survive for hours if not days in no water at all. So when you system has a HSM and the power goes off and all the water drains from your tank, then no worries mate. Your fish will be fine

I should give them a go sometime. The people at Cape Nature will not be happy though!

Well because I put 30 catfish in the sump of this system I thought I would make a vacuum to clean solids from the floor when needed. There was a lot of gunk on the floor anyway after two and a half years of running and not cleaning it.
The vacuum is a small pump with a pipe connected to the inlet and another connected to the outlet and emptying onto the asparagus bed. The pipe with the holes in it didn't work very well , so I just added a short length of normal pipe and vacuumed with it and that worked great

Just tried the little fish in the aquarium with some crumble but after an hour it was still on the tank floor so I netted it out. But two of the babies got into the net. So without thinking lifted them out with my hand. Got the first one out fine but the second spiked me in the thumb, OOOOwwwww
It still hurts 30mins later
Certainly wouldn't want to get spiked by one of the bigger cats
