Thanks Jaymie, was the orange one I was querying....

Quite common for tomato growers to plant a marigold at the end of the row....

Believe more to attract bees, but have heard it suggested that the marigold also has a disease and pest deterent ability.

See that Nasturtiums have the same advantages as companion plants both to repel caterpillars and the like and to attract beneficial predaotry insects :D

Vintners plant roses at the end of the rows, but this afaik was because roses are more susceptible to disease, and so was a early warning system.
This is not the case with Marigolds? Very interesting if they're a bug deterrent.

Seems the Nasturtium is even better in repelling some insects....

A general note companion planting wise.....

grow carrots with tomatos... the carrots act as a repellent to fruit fly but might stunt the growth of carrots.

Beans grow well with carrots and fix nitrogen really well which the carrots love... beans and tomatos don't go well together though....

Had to look this one up today, because I'd forgotten.... of course I punted the other way didn't I, and planted some beans between the tomatos... Doh!

Surely it is not as critical for Beans and Tomatoes to be used in companion planting, in AP systems, as the nitrogen (in the form of Nitrates) is carried by the water in AP systems

The companion guide was intended for soil gardens Tony... perhaps maybe not as applicable to AP

And beans and tomatoes are a big no no.... beans and carrots, yes the carrots like the nitrogen fixation the beans provide....

And carrots and tomatoes... yep. Although the tomatoes may rob a lot from the carrots and stunt them somewhat.... the tomato benefits from the carrots deterring the fruit fly.
