Another question, how much inflow into the fish tank can the standpipe handle before it gets too much for a gravity flow out, esp once the outflow into the growbeds is restricted with irigation grid etc

Would take heaps the way I have set it up because the height of the pipe going into the bed is about 30-40cm lower than the top of the standpipe. Of couse the level that the standpipe is full at is equivalent to the highest level that I have my piping going to the grow-bed. The way I have it - this is equivalent to the height where the water goes into the bed.

Stu - here are some pictures which make the levels clearer. If the amount of water supplied was a bit high for the outlet pipe to handle - the level in the fish tank standpipe would rise to a level higher than the outpipe which would result in a higher pressure and more outflow.

You will see that at the moment the water is going into the standpipe through some holes close to the top instead of over the top of the pipe. I have done this as a temporary thing (until I put the outer pipe on) cause it helped clear up some of the solids floating around in the tank initialy.

File comment: Looking down the pipe you will see that the level of water in the pipe is not the same as the level in the tank or the leve at which the water is entering the pipe. THe level will be pretty much that of the level of the pipe feeding the grow-bed.

Look back to page 23 F&F - plenty of pics there. Yes I will have a 100mm pipe over the 80mm (alla aquaculture). I just have to buy a length this week and install it. I have a full description on page 23 also.

Don't need to mate - have heaps of nutes without that. Need to spend some time on grow-beds now :-)

Was very tempted on the weekend - spend hours on the Saturday trying to get the siphon to work properly (break by itself). Running water all the time. Had to kept going off to pee.

For some reason I was just thinking about this question raised by Stu

Quote:
Do you think you could flood multiple beds by this method?

and my response

Quote:
Sure can - just need to regulate how much water is going to each bed using taps, and of course have the pump from the sump pumping more into the fish tank.

Just wanted to clarify that regulating the water going to each bed is aonly really necessary to the extent of keeping the flow within the parameters taht your autosiphon will work. One of the beauties of using and autosiphon is that the bed will drain once it fills - doesn't matter if you have beds filling and draining at different speeds. This is not the case is sytems where you rely on a timer - as the beds will all drain at the same time - regardless of whether they have filled properly.
