Muz, i found an australia company once on the internet that sold bulk carbon. They had it with pore sizes to suit both gas (air) and liquid (water)

Buggered if i can find them in my 5700 emails :(

Do a bit of a net search for activated carbon or activated charcoal

Don't forget, the carbon filters by attraction of contaminants to its pores, hece the ability to filter colour even if its a dye. So you won't see anything unless there are suspended solids that your bed hasn't removed, and i don't think thats where your colour is coming from

Steve

Steve, I think you are right, I might just go to the irrigation shop and get one of those cartridge type of carbon filters about 70.00 for the housing and one filter plus a few fittings etc.
I have looked on the net for days and have not turned up any bulk supplies, they must be out there , but I can't find them.
Actually the water has cleared even more today. The system is starting to come back into balance again. It is amazing how it just starts to take the turn for the better. The whole thing whent out-of-wack when I lost some big fish and added two grow beds at the same time.
Below is a pix of the Silver Beet, it is a real good "Test" kit for a system. It is starting to turn dark green again, the last 4 weeks or so it has been pale, very pale.
And the water in the fish tank is clearing, so it all is looking good once again.

Did you end up resisting the temptation to get a nitrate test kit Murray?

VB,
Have not got one yet...... soon ! soon ! The water in the fish tank is clearing rapidly all by itself ... The only thing I have a test kit for is PH and that has moved to neutral all by itself....It is just amazing, how it all works.
Murray

Interesting thing, a few weeks ago when my system had been out-of-wack for about 6 weeks (not enough fish in the system) I was having a large difficulty with grubs. I reckon that the world AGM of grubs was being held in my grow beds!!
Now that the system has settled down and the plants are healthy....NO GRUBS
