All 10 silvers have settled in and they are all schooling well.

I will let you know when i get back. I have better idea of peak hour heading north now so i wont be so late next time

UPDATE TIME!!!

After more than two years, I finally have something to update this thread with.

As of the last update, I had some silver perch from Nebbian. Unfortunately after around 6 months a leaf got caught up in my pump, effectively stopping water from flowing. After another fish loss, I decided that having a system with fish was just not practical give that I was away for half of the year for work. There was just too many things that can cause you to come unstuck and I didnt want to get another couple of years to have another loss over something stupid like a leaf.

So for around 12 months I had a couple of goldfish in the tank to keep the mozzies at bay and just used Charlie Carp and Seasol to keep the plants plodding along. Lack lustre growth due to no attention and not enough sun light lead to even less attention. Plus, who would have thought that owning a home was so much work!

Around 6 months ago I decided that enough was enough and I moved the goldfish to a pond and drained the water. Around 3 months ago I told a friend that he could have the system for free, he just had to organise moving it. Of course, enthusiasm does not always convert to action and my system sat there for a few months. Naturally about a week after I made the offer I decided that I was not going to be working away anymore and I regretted looking at my system and knowing it was going.

A couple of weeks ago the system was still sitting there and I decided that fair is fair, there has been plenty of time to collect and it is still here. So I set that bad boy up in another location, using the full IBC that I used to move the silver perch down to Perth as the tank giving me two grow beds. The system has been getting dosed with Charlie Carp to cycle it and now I just have to sort out some fish. Along with the AP, I have also set up a dirt garden too, so that should be fun. I have no idea what I am doing there.

All of these photos were taken 2 - 3 weeks ago. I will update with some more photos in the next week or so. The excitement is almost like a new kid start again!

'Do I have to cycle before I get the fish?'

Welcome back into the madness...if I remember correctly old school guys (eb, rupe, Faye and others recommended starting with fish and feeding lightly. They didn't care for the way most of us Yanks started by cycling with humonia or similar).

actually it is a couple of fish - not too many......
just enough to get the ammonia ticking but not overwelm the system, so need a lot of water volume to each fish so they get through. Though sometimes having small fish help as the load increases with system as they grow.
Goldfish and Koi work OK as they get used to the tank and hang around for a while. They can make good tank-mate mentors and comforters when you add young fish later.



Ryan - I note all your old images in first lot of pages have all dropped out (at least when I view at moment).
Did you use a link or something ?


p.s. some good space for some wicking beds there Ryan. They may work for you.
