You can turn a RELAY on and off with that controller , the relay will turn on and off the pump.
Is there any reasoin you wanted a battery controller rather than mains powered?
Give me an idea what you are trying to run and I'll help you out. I have better controllers than that and MUCH cheaper.

I want to use it in my little solar powered AP system and they look a bit cheaper than the 12 volt timers I have been able to find.

30 Watts ,, assume full power about 6 hours a day ,, 80% efficiency at putting into battery ,,
that gives .,, 0.144 KWH's to play with. ( mains power cost of about 4 cents)
UMMMM ,, good luck :)

is this the sort of relay you are talking about chappo?

you'll have to excuse me I know sweet F A about electronics!

I know the solar is overrated, its just a new toy, LOL! I just like the idea of it.

Nope ,, If you want to use an irrigation controller output for relays are 24V AC , it really doesn't matter what voltage your pump etc is.
This is an example of a 24 Volt AC coil relay.
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll ... tsupported

That would turn on and off a bloody big pump.
Best way to think is the coil is like the plastic bit of a normal light switch ,, you apply the volts it pushes down and light go's on ,turn off 24 volts and same as push switch up ( light go's off), doesn't matter if light is 24Volt or, 12 or 240 .....

Ok so update time.
I have moved the system off the patio so that it can get some more sun, I have another small GB now cycling.
Plants are growing great, dont know about water quality as I dont have a test kit but the fish are as happy as ever.
I have pretty much given up on running the system entirely on solar but am still thinking about using it for a back up system or possibly running a 240v back up system, like everyone elses only in reverse!
well heres some pics
