Yeah vh202, that was my impression of Tooperang but they will sell smaller quantities. i think its $0.80 each per 50 for their 3 inch variety or $1.80 for their 2 to 8 inch per 50. and you basically double the price for numbers less than 50. it would pay to check on this. what suburb do you live in Vh202 as im in Blackwood and would be about two weekends away from being ready for fish. my IBC is cut and ready to be cleaned and plumbed.

I live about 10 mins away from Tooperang - i called them last week:

Prices:

$1:80 for 8 inch
$1:60 for 6.5 inch
$0:80 for 3.5 inch

Poly pipe is filled to about halfway with scoria, this raises the water level and still allows plenty of water flow to help prevent blockages. I will add another length of it tomorow. I used a soldering iron to punch holes in the little pots;

Also used solder iron to add the suction holes for my SLO bucket, it works a treat! Pump sits inside and vacuums the bottom. Will be much better when the sump is plumbed in as this will place the pump out of the FT

Ive also now dug the sump big enough to drop in an IBC (just tank no cage)! SOLID CLAY, damn that was a big job! But now the bottom of ST is lower than bottom of FT, and will make the system about 2500 litres.

Media cycling up to use in the gb's, and the trout are jumping clear of the water in their feeding frenzy's!

Some notes:

The 'Wave Maker' is fantastic. two small powerheads push the water into a swirl, it pushes and mixes the aeration and helps drop all solids to the SLO, and gives the fish something to swim against; it also cavitates loudly when the water needs topping up - bonus!

Cheap chinese water pumps work fine but have short power cords - this can be a hazard! Also means adapting 19mm polypipe for the outlet

On the first hot day the air pump overheated and slowed to a stop - i now have a small desk fan pointed at it, this works fine

Radial flow filter works great and IS essential - after cleaning, the waste stews in a big bin before the dirt gardens get it

I was given some flexible 19mm pipe, like polypipe but kinda rubbery - this is perfect for the loop siphons, and makes a really cheap watertight grommet for polypipe fittings!

temps soared over the last couple of days...



so out they came, now smoked and in the freezer...



all up 14.5 kilos, biggest 605g, average 360g, smallest 100g, but he had no upper jaw!! Photo is on the wifes fone, ill post it later...

I got my trout through the heat last week by turning off grow beds around midday until the following morning in the hope they had cooled, and by adding another pump to just spray back into the tank to add more oxygen. I also had 4 airstones on the go.

My trout have not grown well at all - I think I got them a week before you did. My whole system has been unwell & I haven't pinpointed the problem yet - a work in progress.I hope we have some cooler weather over the next month so the trout are worth culling - I would hate to see them end up in the compost

What are you putting in your system to keep it going over summer?

Thanks! And yes, yum! Sad to hear ur system is unwell, but the cool days have dropped my temp down to 17 now, so hopefully urs will keep on going.

Ill do that with the beds next year and switch off during the hot days, and my wife suggested a pump to spray water for cooling- a fountain would be great. Goal for nxt year is a kilo!

Bit of a laugh, but theres 1 trout still in the tank!! missed the net somehow, and still going strong! Good luck to him!

As far as over summer, ive had a few yabbies kicking around in a tub over winter, theyre now in the FT, and ill take a trip to a mates creek this week to try and get a mass more - should keep some nutes going. Added a few hundred worms from the worm farm to the big GB's (unfiltered water, loads of solids) and they should add a bit more; and i chucked in some seasol, just because i havent added anything to the system till now, and thought the plants needed a treat!

I figure i can just keep up the seasol until trout next year - which will only 2 - 3 months max. Please anyone step in and stop me here if thats not good...

I also pulled out all the plants that were there just to suck up nutes, like the tree looking endives, and most of the heavy feeders like broccoli.
