so to dads disbelief i executed a 50% water change. Ammo should be back at just under 2ppm now. Strict no feed instructions.

zero nitrites ATM, so cycle is still way young, even with the filter stuff from my place and a $20 bottle of cycle bacteria.

all the fish now have traces of "beer batter" disease, although just a light flour dusting, not like the deep fried variety mine had during their last hours.

am seriously thinking about removing the plants and dosing to 20ppt, dads getting a 10 kg bag tomorrow.

This rate of salt will probably hurt the cycle aswell, as each strain of bacteria has specific salinity criteria but hey, i got no one to blame but ME.

TAKE THIS AS A LESSON, NEWBIES, even when a seasoned AP person breaks the rules it bites them in the ASS.

BIG TANK or very slow fish additions.

Yep, for reference dads system is about 550 litres if it was 1100 then the ammonia would have only been 2ppm and i wouldn't have even blinked (well, maybe with just one eye ;))

ahhh nutz!

Just re-read the nitrifying facts in the useful info section.

I couldn't have picked a worse time to try and setup / cycle dads system!

nitrifying bacteria displays a 75% reduction in growth at 7C to 10C (where the pond started)

and ZERO growth at 4C (where it is now).

I'm seriously contemplating emoving all the trout, putting into a wheelie bin with an air stone and 20 PPT salt to cure the beer batter and then adding them to my tank unti we can sort out dads biofilter.

Steve

Nope, didn't write it, i modified it, but the bulk of it was borrowed from the web ;)

i DO know it backwards, but in all the excitement over trout for low temps the penny didn't drop with dads system being new and all.

Mine in my system are fine.

New plan for dads system!

Remove the 10 most healthy trout (no sap), put in 120 litre wheelie bin wit bubbler for 24 hrs @ 20ppt salt then re-locate to my place. (not a bad deal, huh?)

Repeat this process again for the next 10 most healthy (longer immersion if signs of sap)

will leave about 5 in dads system.
