3ppt is 3 parts per thousand eg 3kg salt 1000 litres water in fish tank. Pool salt is good as it should be straight salt - not table salt as it may contain additives such as anti caking agent.

I was actually surprised its 3 kilograms of salt. Does that make the water taste salty? - Do fresh water fish like that?

No, it's starts tasting salty around 5-6ppt. And yes, fresh water fish love it.

Almost lost one of the trout today. During the morning feeding frenzy, one jumped out and landed in the SLO overflow! As a precaution I've now cable-tied some shade cloth over the overflows.

These trout are excitable little buggers :)

The plant growth has been pretty phenomenal so far - so much better than my BYAP system. It could be due to being constant flow rather than 15/45 flood and drain, or maybe anaerobic zones in the BYAP system?

I gave the trout a handful of worm farm worms. They didn't eat them until they sank halfway down the tank. Bit underwhelming really... It's more fun feeding them pellets!

Something is eating the cauliflower leaves. Any ideas? Caterpillars?

Yea Ive found that the trout arent too fussed on anything but pellets.

Id say cabbage moth catapillars are eating your cauli, keep an eye on the little green bastards cause they blend into the scenery. They turn into those white moths.

Ah ha, found one! Does this guy turn into a cabbage moth?

He got gobbled up by the trout pretty quickly!

Sorry to be a pain and ask this which its probably been answered many times.
Constant flood is when the pump is always on and the bed is....
1. always flooded
2. always flooding but empties with a siphon?

That may be a different type fuzz as the usual cabbage moths catapillars are bright green, but Id say they are chomping on your cauli anyways.

Jay - Constant flood is the bed is always flooded to the hieght of the standpipe (~30mm from the surface) and the water exits that standpipe, no syphon. Its set up exactly like a flood and drain but pull the syphon out.

Right thought so, thanks for clearing that up, just can't get my head around how plants can have their roots water logged all the time. I know now that its the oxygenated flowing water that prevents root rot etc, this is why water raft systems work.

I wouldn't mind trying constant flood with a small enough wattage pump.

Fuzzy, get some dipel mate. Nothing worse than going out one day to no leaves :(

With the better growth, does you IBC system get more sunlight? Even 30 mins can make a noticeable difference.
