I have added salt around the standpipe inside the media guard before. This seams to dissolve the salt pretty well and you won't have any undissolved salt sitting on the bottom of the tank witch could burn the fish.
I would not feed any new fish or only feed very small amounts for a few days after you transport them, gives them a Chance to settle.
I've learned and so have many others on the forum that the less you mess with the system the better it runs. Keeping the fish happy and healthy is the most important thing to having the whole thing run long term. Its bloody hard to just let it be though.
I tested twice a day at one stage, its definitely an obsession ha ha.

Thanks for the info! This seems to have worked well, I added to about 1g/L.

Fish swimming around happy, and all is looking good for now. We will see how this new batch takes to the tank.

I did have something kind of cool happen. Frogs laid a huge string of eggs in the water, maybe about 200 or so, and tadpoles hatched a couple days later. After about 3 days, I now have 0 tadpoles. Free fish food I guess, but I kinda felt sorry for the little dudes, no place to hide from my always starving goldfish

Thanks for all the help/comments everyone and I will post an update in a couple days, hopefully with some tilapia.
