Viscosity is a measure of the resistance of a fluid to deform under shear stress. It is commonly perceived as "thickness", or resistance to flow. Viscosity describes a fluid's internal resistance to flow and may be thought of as a measure of fluid friction. Thus, water is "thin", having a lower viscosity, while vegetable oil is "thick" having a higher viscosity. All real fluids (except superfluids) have some resistance to shear stress, but a fluid which has no resistance to shear stress is known as an ideal fluid or inviscid

Yeah, I meant translucent, like most of the IBC's are. They let lots of light in through the sides and seem to have high algae problems. I had problems with my IBC and also with a 200L drum with the top cut off that is the same colour as an IBC. They where both under my pergola that has light shadecloth on the side (don't know the rating, but maybe 40 or 50% block) and light grey polycarbonate roofing.

The black 200L drum I am using for the DWC tank is in the same place and it has had no algae at all, even while it was cycling.

It's been a while, and not much has progressed, there are still no growbeds on the system, but I thought it was time for a quick update.

I did some water tests last night, pH 7.2, Amm & Nitrite 0, Nitrate 80 - 120 (hard to tell), kH 4.

It seems the shell grit is working as I have been doing fortnightly water changes to keep the nitrates down as there is no grow beds setup yet. I have the tubs for the DWC containers and one for a F&D bed, just need to get around to plumbing them in and making a stand.

The temps have been really cold the past two nights, -2.6 and -3 lat night. The water temp was down to 4.6 yesterday morning (about 9am) so I have added a heater to keep the temps up a bit. The goldies were fine, although a little slow, but the Tandans looked a bit sadder, they were on the bottom of the tank, leaning to one side a little and not moving much. They look happier today with the temps around 18.
